Find a Job at College

I had a job landscaping every summer in high school.  Once I got to college, I still needed money, but had less time to earn it (what with all the studying and… stuff).  My parents would help me out with some basics but, if I wanted spending money, I had to earn it.  Luckily my college had several job opportunities.  These weren’t internships or anything scholarly… just the menial tasks around campus.

My job was in the laundry room for the athletic practice facility.  Wash. Dry. Fold. Repeat.  This turned out to be perfect because it required practically no attention and offered a lot of down time which I used to study and do homework.  All while getting paid $6 an hour.  No, it didn’t pay well, but it gave me both some quiet time and some extra cash.

If you’re looking to pick up a little extra cash while at school, check to see if they offer opportunities like these.  If you’re just looking to fill up more time or earn extra money, then look for opportunities off campus as well.  College towns/cities are usually full of retail stores, bars, restaurants, and other businesses that look for seasonal help.

Maybe there are more scholarly jobs than laundry that pique your interest and would be more beneficial for your education/career development.  If you want to go that route, research organizations that you’d like to work for and see if they have internship programs.  Find out if your college has a career services department.  They may be able to help you in this situation as well.

Also, remember to tap your own skills as potential money makers.  Are you a musician?  Try getting some gigs at local bars/clubs.  Are you a photographer/artist?  Try freelancing.  Like kids or animals?  How about babysitting or dog-walking?

There are plenty of options out there.  Find what works for you.  What’s a good college job?
